Generational Succession Planning

Our family-owned law firm understands that building a successful business requires years of dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance. That is why we developed our Legacy Master Plan, a strategic approach designed to help business owners thoughtfully transition their company, wealth, and values to the next generation.

Our process focuses on continuity, stability, and long-term protection, ensuring that what you have worked so hard to create continues to benefit your family and successors well into the future.

With more than 20 years of experience advising business owners, we provide clear legal guidance, structured planning, and practical solutions that support a smooth and secure generational transition. Through careful planning and proactive legal strategy, our Legacy Master Plan helps preserve your life’s work and protect the future of those who depend on it.

The Who, How, and When

A successful succession plan requires thoughtful consideration of the Who, How, and When of transitioning your business and legacy. At Roger Doumanian, Attorney at Law, APC, we guide clients through the critical process of identifying who is best qualified to carry forward the business, how the transition should be structured to preserve stability and value, and when the transition should begin and be completed to ensure continuity and long-term success.

Our approach is designed to minimize uncertainty, avoid disruption, and provide a clear path forward for both current owners and future leaders. By evaluating leadership readiness, ownership structure, timing considerations, and legal implications, we help develop a practical succession strategy that protects what you have built while positioning the next generation for continued growth and stability. Through careful planning and experienced legal guidance, we help ensure your legacy is transferred with clarity, confidence, and purpose.

Our 9-Step Legacy Master Plan Process

We have developed a proprietary, structured 9-step process to help business owners plan for a smooth and successful transition of their business and legacy. Our Legacy Master Plan focuses on the key elements of succession planning — determining who will take over, how the transition will occur, and when it should take place — providing a clear path that promotes continuity, stability, and long-term success for the next generation.

Discovery

We begin by learning about your business, your family, your goals, and the legacy you want to preserve. This includes understanding your ownership structure, leadership dynamics, long-term vision, and any concerns about transition, control, or protection.

Legacy Assessment

Next, we evaluate the current condition of your business and succession readiness. We identify key legal, operational, financial, and structural issues that may affect a future transition, and we assess the strengths and vulnerabilities of your current plan.

The Who
We help you determine who is best suited to take over your business and continue your legacy. This may include family members, partners, key employees, or outside successors. We work through qualifications, readiness, leadership ability, and long-term fit.
The How

Once the right successor or succession path is identified, we help structure how the transition should happen. This may involve ownership transfers, voting control, management succession, buy-sell planning, entity restructuring, asset protection measures, and other legal strategies designed to support a smooth handoff.

The When

Timing is critical. We help determine when the transition should begin, what milestones should be met along the way, and when the transfer should be completed. This creates a realistic timeline that reduces uncertainty and helps avoid disruption.

Protection Planning

A strong succession plan must also protect the business and the people involved. We help implement legal safeguards designed to preserve value, reduce risk, minimize disputes, and maintain continuity throughout the transition process.

Documentation

We, along with our strategic partners, prepare the legal documents necessary to support the plan. Depending on your needs, this may include shareholder agreements, operating agreements, buy-sell agreements, written consents, transfer documents, governance documents, and other succession-related instruments.

Implementation
With the strategy and documents in place, we assist with putting the plan into action. This includes coordinating the transition steps, aligning leadership and ownership changes, and helping ensure the process moves forward in an orderly and effective manner.
Review & Adjustment
Succession planning is not a one-time event. As your business, family, and goals change, your Legacy Master Plan should evolve as well. We remain available to review, update, and refine the plan over time so it continues to serve its intended purpose.

Collaboration

Succession planning is most effective when approached collaboratively, as it often involves considerations that extend beyond legal structure alone. We understand that a comprehensive Legacy Master Plan requires coordination with your trusted tax and financial advisors, estate planning attorney, and, when appropriate, family law counsel for matters such as prenuptial or postnuptial agreements.

Our firm works closely with your existing professional advisors to help ensure alignment across all aspects of the transition.

If you do not yet have the appropriate advisors in place, we can assist in assembling a qualified team through our network of strategic partners, helping create a cohesive and well-supported plan designed to protect your business, your assets, and your legacy.
